Reporter Phil Johnston discovered an interesting political story not even in his stations viewing area and shows how effective a piece can be when you go beyond just the dry facts and figures. In a local race, a longtime resident challenges an appointee, one of the many Orthodox Jews who recently moved to the small town of Postville. The emotions and choices made by both contenders and their supporters show how politics can indeed affect us deeply.

These two Seattle stations paired up to take advantage of each others strengths during the 1998 election. This clip from the November election night simulcast shows how the duties were divided:

KIRO: the anchors, on-screen graphics for all the incoming voting results, reporters on location at the candidates parties, reporters covering the national races, and an in-house analyst to explain the finer points of polling and statistics.

KCTS: a group of commentators and analysts from KCTS, the Seattle Times, and KIRO news radio based at the Municipal League building providing longer, detailed discussion of the evenings developments; interviews with other political experts and officials.
