  Pelican Rapids

KARE  NBC logo  Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota

clip run time » 5:27

If we judged books by covers, reporter Phil Johnston says, Pelican Rapids would appear to tell the typical tale of a rural Minnesota town. Turn the page, however, and youll find much more to this story. As immigrants came to Pelican Rapids to work at a turkey processing plant, the ethnic make-up for this town of 1900 people changed tremendously. With it came change, conflict, and cooperation.

Reporter Phil Johnston discovered an interesting political story not even in his stations viewing area and shows how effective a piece can be when you go beyond just the dry facts and figures. In a local race, a longtime resident challenges an appointee, one of the many Orthodox Jews who recently moved to the small town of Postville. The emotions and choices made by both contenders and their supporters show how politics can indeed affect us deeply.

PART 1: The first part of a two-night special that looks within the newsroom to understand how race is portrayed in news broadcasts and how it affects race relations. This half looks at how often people of different races appear on the news and as which types: victim, criminal, expert, etc. This is also a particularly good example of how to build a show around statistics and poll results without disintegrating into a broadcast version of a PowerPoint slide show.

PART 2: Run on the second night, this story turns the camera on the KRON newsroom itself. A race committee was formed to investigate how people within news operations felt about race and about how ethnicity and race could be affecting the working relationships within the department.
